If you have followed my blog, you would know that we are required to create a film opening as a coursework in my subject, Media Studies. You can read more about film opening here!
Every big things start with small idea, so do this project. Our teacher asked us to create a elevator pitch to introduce our own idea for the film opening project and the ideas of five people would be chosen. The group will be then being divided randomly to each idea. The person who come up with that proposal would automatically be put in the group work on that topic.
I remembered struggle a lot to come up with an idea but then, an advertisement about peppermints came up when I was watching some Youtube videos to get inspiration from. The color of red and white at that night (at about 0:00 am) make me feel quite creepy and scary. During the time, an image appear in my mind about a white room with red blood stain on the wall. In the room there is a man standing, wearing a mask, holding a knife in his hand with a corpse next to him. After maping out my mind, it sum up to an idea of a serial killer that is obsess with sweets and candies (red and white candies).
Now that was just the starting point, the root of the tree. This serial killer have to need a "soul" inside him. I was think that "This character need something behind him, a dark past, something motivate him to do this" because in my opinion a good villain protagonist is the one who can have viewers' sympathy. So after thinking for a while, I know that the best story to touch views' heart is family story. This is how I develop the dark past for the character, a past full of unhappiness, tragedy of suffering domestic violence and a lack of parents' love.
So why candy, you may think? Well, for everybody childhood, candy is something that link with happiness, joy and love. However, I want to be different, so I transform this image to a creepy and scary picture when you remember about it. The color of white and red already have a creepy vibe on it, it just need a story to enhance the mood. So I come up with an idea, what if his dad throw him a candy whenever the character want his dad attention. This would create a link between the candy and the story and create my wanted mood.
Finally, it need to have a name, so I called the movie "Sweet Dream". That was how I came up with the idea for the opening scene for the coursework of media studies.
