COMPONENT 3

The third component of the Media Studies subject is an advanced portfolio. This assignment can be done either in groups or individually. I decided to work as a group.

In the end, we need to provide an output (media product), a blog updating our progress on doing the component with evidence and a creative evaluation as a group. The component is divided into 4 tasks.

Task 1: Maintaining a blog based on the creative processes

For this task, I will need to set up a blog (this blog) for the sake of recording and outlining the creative process of me and my group producing the outcome. The blog should be updated regularly on our work on the component as well as other knowledge related to Media Studies.

According to the Cambridge Syllabus for Media Studies, component 3, the blog should contain:

  • The process of research, planning and production

  • Any refinement, changes or edits made, and reflections on key moments

  • All individual contributions to any task undertaken as a group

  • Evidence of any preliminary exercises

  • The final finished product, clearly labelled

  • The creative critical reflection, clearly labelled

Task 2: Maintaining a blog based on the creative processes

In our research, we are required to provide detailed research about forms and conventions, production contexts, the role of technologies, audiences and representations. All the evidence of research should be shown in the blog and can be used when writing the creative reflection.

All images and text should be original or created by the students. Sound also but music can be taken from acknowledged sources.

Task 3: Implementing the Plan and Creating Media Products

As an advanced portfolio, students are required to produce media products for 1 of the 4 packages below:

There are 4 options for us to choose from:

  • Short film package (this is what I choose)

  • Music promotion package

  • Film promotion package

  • Documentary package

Besides the 5 minutes short film (major tasks) we are also required to create a social media page for the short film with a postcard advertisement for the film at a short film festival

Task 4: Evaluating the Project

We are also required to write a critical reflection paper on our work. There are 4 compulsory questions to follow:

1. How do your products represent social groups or issues?

2. How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

3. How do your products engage with the audience?

4. How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?
