[Pre - production] EDITING - COLOR GRADING

Updated: Apr 10, 2024

Besides being a director, I am also the editor of the group. Unlike the film opening, a short movie is much longer and requires me to do more editing, ESPECIALLY GRADING AND ADJUST THE COLORS OF SCENES. That is the reason why I found I must do this research before getting into editing the movie.

Before going into the research, I will briefly discuss my initial color palette. I want to do a video with a very pale palette (color grading) to show the main character's mental problems andy atmosphere. However, I do not want it to be too grim because I want to trick the viewers into thinking that this is just a healing short movie at the beginning of the short film and the scary/horror element is only pushed in at the end of the movie, creating a climax and a slight twist in the plot. Also, the palette will change to a bright mood color when the main character meets that stranger -> sign of healing -> prepare for the twist.

INSPIRATION and REFERENCE

DEPRESS

There was an MV that I found on YouTube that perfectly match the color I wanted for my short movie in the first part of the movie:

All the images were taken from "Zevia - why do I exist? (Official Music Video)"

The color above perfectly suits the mood that I want my short movie to have. It is a little blueish, dark color, high contrast, low light, and dark shadow. Here are some color palettes that I can get from those images and ideas:

UP MOOD SCENE

Here is the palette of colors that I will balance for those scenes in the part when the main character meets the stranger. It is brighter and more vibrant, showing a revival in mental health and a sense of warmth and healing.

Some references may be the following:

With very bright light highlight, it creates a much more positive energy

CONCLUSION: This research is beneficial as it helps me better understand what I will do and how I will carry out the color grading when editing this short movie.
