[Pre - production] EDITING - EDITING SOFTWARE

Updated: Apr 10, 2024

Research on "powerful weapons" for this battle...

Nowadays, multiple editing software are available for editors to use. Each software has its own strengths and weaknesses, and different people have different views on that software: some are more suitable for a particular person than others. This research is carried out to find out which editing software I will use to edit this project as an editor. From a list of editing software, including Camtasia, Filmora, Premiere, Synthesia, and Cap Cut, ... I decide to do a comparison between Filmora (Filmora 13) and Adobe Premiere Pro.

1. FILMORA 13

Filmora 13 is an editing software from Wondershare that has been trusted by many small YouTubers and Vloggers on YouTube for their media products (The Filmora 13 have just been published on October 2023).

I myself have been using Filmora 11 and Filmora 12 for quite some time to edit simple and short clips. From my personal experience, I found this is a basic but fully equipped software, meaning that it has a lot of functions and can get the job done. Furthermore, I enjoy the stock footage and the library they have for users to download and use. It also has packages that follow some themes, making the editing job much easier. Recently, their newest version, Filmora 13, even has many features that use AI, such as AI-generated thumbnail, AI text-to-speech (and vice versa), AI text-to-video, AI vocal adjustment, ... Not only that, the HUD/interface of Filmora is very user-friendly.

However, many other users have reported that they have mile-lagging and hot CPUs when they use Filmora. Also, I am now not a big fan of AI because although they can get the job done for us, it may not be 100% the same as what we want, and if we exclude the AI features that Filmora has, advanced effects are still something that Filmora 13 is weak at. Furthermore, despite the big library of templates and presets, it does not go along with the subscription to the software. You need to pay an extra amount of money to access their library (Filmstock)

2. ADOBE PREMIERE PRO

Without any doubt, Adobes software has a long history of development. It has been trusted by small content creators and those "big bosses" in the industry (movie production, CGI effects, etc.). Premiere Pro is one of those software. Premiere Pro also has impressive presets, filters, and effects that users can access. It also provides almost every effect (even the advanced ones). Furthermore, what I like about Premiere Pro is that it is included in the Adobe-Ecology, meaning that Adobe's software can interact. For instance, you can take the footage, throw it in Adobe After Effects to add advanced effects, and then throw it back to Premiere Pro. Compared with Filmora 13, although Premier Pro does not have many AI features installed into the software itself, Adobe has Premier Pro beta, a software designed by Adobe full of AI technology for users to experience.

However, being a professional video editing software, it makes the software much more harder to use compared to other software. Not only that, the system requirement for Adobe Premiere Pro will be higher than other software, as the following:

Adobe Premiere system requirement
Wondershare Filmora system requirement

In addition, the library of stock images and templates from Premiere Pro is less than those that Filmora's library can provide.

3. CONCLUSION

After researching carefully and reading through many reviews, I have figured out the positive and the negative side of both of the software. With that being said, I choose Adobe Premiere Pro because of the following reasons:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro is trusted by professional editors who have worked a long time in the industry

  • Despite Filmora having a much more varied library of presets and effects, these effects and presets are not suitable to the editing style (professional) that I chose for this project.

  • The Adobe-Ecology is a great advantage. Last year (at the AS level), I used Adobe After Effect to help with the intro animation.

  • My laptop is strong enough to run Adobe Premiere Pro, so why not?

  • The pricing, although different, with 1$ more, I can get access to all Adobe software rather than only the video editing software if I purchase Filmora.
