[Post - production] 24/03/2024 - The "great" assembly

Updated: Apr 10, 2024

During the production phase, we record one scene over and over and over again: one scene can have up to 10 takes. This is the reason why the first step "The Assembly" is so important. Because by doing this stage, I will be able to sort out all the fail shot and select the shot that most suitable to what I want/the team want.

To do this, I had have an online session, siting with the other 2 members in the group to choose which footage look the best and fit the best to our purpose at that particular scene. The meeting took hours, from 2:00 PM to 4:00PM, if it wasn't me and Hien were busy because of our extra class at 5:00 PM it was likely that the meeting will end at a much later time.

This is the first time we worked with short movie and it took longer than we expected to sort and choose the right footage out of all the other fail one. Sometimes, there were not any "perfect" footage, required me to combine footages or to using specialized tools on the editing software to fix that problem. Without our surprise, we encounter the first problem.

During the filming day 04, as I have mentioned in the blog post, we have forgot to set the ISO making all of the footages on that day was grainy. And because the actor was so busy, we cannot plan for a refilm. As a result, I will need to solve that in post-production. This is a long story so I think I will talk about that in one blog post on it own!

Carry on with this assembly stage, after that afternoon and that night also, we have successfully put the very first draft of the movie structure together with scene go chronologically, followed the script of the movie. Here is where another problem arise, it exceed the limited time of 5 minutes. This make me have to work on it and to trim unnecessary footages so that the movie's length can be within 5 minutes.

On the next editing sessions, I need to do:

  • Fix noisy footage

  • Trim unnecessary footage
